HUMANS

Humans are...strong in their own way. Determined to say the least, with the capacity to become any of the other species either by choice or by force. They're the main food group for vampires so they've got a bit of a short stick in that department...especially the ghouls. These poor souls have been chosen to stand by their vampire 'master' or 'mistresses' side to offer anything that vampire might desire. ( Namely a nice fresh vein to snack on ) They are at the vampire's beck and call and many of them are under the influence of the vampire's powers.

Humans are also heavily susceptible to the werewolf bite, the vampire's bite and really just about any form of magic out there. Their lifespan is average at best, and there's a chance that when they die they might become a ghost. Still they're probably the most fun species on the board because many of them don't even KNOW what's going on around them. The supernatural community despite it's size and how widespread it is, keeps to itself. Hiding in the shadows and other places so that the humans might never know.

After all, as frail as humans might be they have their numbers, and history has proven they're entirely capable of wiping out entire species if given the chance.

WITCHES
Witches have been around from time immemorial, and are rumoured to be responsible for the creation of vampires, shifters, and werewolves. While no proof can be found, and there are no survivors from the beginning of time to explain it all, it is the common assumption. There are also additional relics of the past that indicate witches are nowhere near as powerful today as they once may have been. While witches can live a very long time, they tip the scale at around 150 years, are prone to all of the effects of aging and age-related illness, and look their age.

For their own protection, the witches of London have organized themselves under the Witch Council. It is headed by a King or Queen, with six elders beneath them: two female, two male, and two non-binary. All Witch Council leadership is comprised strictly of London natives (no fandom characters) and more can be read about the matter here.

Witch Magic/Creating your Witch
Witches on Our End are significantly less powerful than witches on most other supernatural sites. Their strength comes from what they can do as a group rather than just as the individual, indeed it's usually very easy for witches to be able to combine their abilities for greater effects. As an oft persecuted group throughout history it's something of another defense mechanism that forces them to cooperate towards greater goals and gives them a stronger cultural identity as witches rather than powerful members being more willing to throw the weaker to the wolves to save their own skin.

In general, witches have two types of magic. The first is their innate ability, something that they can do without the need for spells or having to put in a lot of time and usually at little cost or weakness to themselves. The second type of magic is their focus, which is usually a broadening of their innate ability that through other means they can access. There are basically two kinds of witches depending on how their focus works. Both are considered acceptable within the lore, and both have their own pros and cons associated with them.

1. Spellwork Witches
Spell witches are the more traditional type of witch. Whatever their focus is, it relies on spells to be able to work. What we mean by spells is that in order to use the abilities that fall under the focus there is a necessary combination of time, materials, or setting to be able to use this magic. Spells take time to study, practice and cast, rituals may require a specific setting, both most likely require certain materials to be able to cast.

Spell witches are also the ones that are most likely to benefit from having help with spells. Two or more witches will always be able to either work the spell faster or to greater effect than one witch working on their own. There are other shortcuts that spell witches can take that involve blood or sacrifice. Those shortcuts tend to have a heavy toll on the caster an as such aren't recommended by elder witches to their younger kin. There are however certain spells that can only be accomplished with some sacrificial aspect: the spell to make ghosts corporeal, the vampire daywalking spell and the spell to help a werewolf control their full form can't be done without sacrifice and require admin approval to be done.

Pros of spellwork witches:
- The kind of magic they can accomplish within their focus can be extremely diverse. Since they are using spells, if they can study it and work out a spell to accomplish the goal, there's no reason aside from their own ability why they couldn't learn how to do it.
- With the help of other witches they can accomplish some truly spectacular spells.

Cons of spellwork witches:
- Spells and ritual magic just aren't instant. It takes time to learn, time to get good at it, and time to do it even once you are good at it.

2. Criterion Witches
Criteron witches are an odd bunch in that they essentially have two innate abilities by appearances, but not by mechanics. For criterion witches their focus is a second instant ability, that comes at a high personal cost. Essentially, all criterion witches use sacrificial magic to access their focus, but it is personal sacrifice. Either it's their own blood, or the magic is fueled by their pain. To that end, unless certain criteria are met, these witches really can't use their focus at all. To have access to their focus, something has to happen that allows it, whether they create the circumstances themselves or have them thrust upon them.

It is worth noting that just because criterion witches have an instant focus once the criteria are met, does not mean they can use it with little to no damage to themselves like their actual innate ability. The focus ability will always be extremely taxing, either because to be able to use it they have to be significantly damaged, or because using it takes a huge amount of energy that they are pulling from themselves rather than from spell materials.

Pros of criterion witches:
- Once the criteria are met, they can instantly use their focus ability and these abilities can be devastating to an opponent or extremely beneficial to allies.
- They just have to worry about perfecting their focus ability. Since they can devote all of their time to this, they can specialize in it to a point that most spellwork witches just can't do with their own focus regardless of how narrow it might be.

Cons of criterion witches:
- They aren't able to diversify their body of magic. They have their innate ability and the second one granted by their focus, and that's it.
- The addition of other witches in the mix has no amplification of the focus ability.

Ultimately, how powerful a witch is will come down to how they're played rather than how much or how many powers they have. Indeed, witches are fairly limited in how many powers they can have. A witch who is resourceful about how they use their powers, can get far more out of them than one who never thinks out of the box. To that end, it is arguable that a well trained spellwork witch is generally stronger than a well trained criterion witch just because of how much can be done with their focus, but may not always be true depending on what the focus is.

If you have concerns whether or not your witch is too powerful a good rule of thumb is that natives probably have a better grasp of their abilities than imports just due to having more experience in learning how to utilize them to their fullest advantage, which is not to say they are stronger, just better prepared. Note that imports have only been in London for six years at most.

Enchanting/Bespelling Objects
This only applies to spellwork witches, but the ability to put magic into items or food and drink is a very common ability and doesn't require you to state it as the focus. This is something that could be learned from a witch in the council or even through the right books if your character can get their hands on them. Their ability to put their magic into an object either for later use, or use by someone else, is limited by only how well they understand the process and how much practice they have had. While it will always be easier to bespell an object for another witch to use, it is possible to bespell objects so they can be used by any other group. For example: the vampire daywalking spell is often bound to an object for permanence given how long vampires can live. It is also worth noting that it will always be the easiest to make items for themselves to use as it has their own magic in it and doesn't require the extra work involved in making it useful to someone else.

The same act of enchanting can be applied to buildings, in which case it is called warding. Warding is typically taken on by groups of witches, though some have spent so much time devoted to it that they can make fairly decent wards on their own. The main important thing to keep in mind with warding is that warding a home with a threshold (basically denoting the home as belonging to someone that it will protect) will always be the easiest, and that warding a public space is basically impossible. Businesses are sort of in the middle depending on the ownership of the building and the ownership of the business, same for meeting spaces like the warehouse the Witch Council occasionally uses for its meetings.

Please keep in mind that any item that's bespelled or place that is warded will take a massive amount of time. If the ritual takes an hour, bespelling something to do the same thing takes a week. Just because this is something basically all witches can do, doesn't mean that they ever really want to.

How to become a Witch
The short answer is: you can't. The only way to be a witch in this world is to be born one.

How to kill a Witch
Witches can be killed with any of the usual means that can kill a human. They're just significantly more tricky to get to. They can also die of old age, though depending on their skills- some have been known to live up to the age of 150. Unfortunately, they do look their age.

Note: Always get the other players consent before casting spells. Ask an admin if you're worried your spell might be bordering on too powerful or godmoddy. Remember, a group of witches casting together is far more powerful than a lone witch.

We understand that witches are one of our more complicated groups. If you have any questions that can't be answered right away feel free to ask Chelle over PM or discord.

SHIFTERS

The supernatural community would consider a werewolf the shifter's bastard cousins. Whereas werewolves are outright hated, shifters are well respected members of the supernatural community. A shifters animal is an extension of themselves, often representing that person's inner most self. You can tell a lot about the traits someone has just by seeing the animal they turn into, and really every animal is fair game. While each shifter can only become ONE animal, what that animal is is entirely open to you. They can be anything from the tiniest flea to a mighty elephant.

While in animal form shifters are capable of human speech, though some choose to fully embrace their animal self and refuse to speak in that form. Generally a shifter's clothes will remain on once they shift back, though there have been a few notable instances where that particular perk hasn't worked as expected, and more than one shifter has had to quickly make a dash for cover when it became clear they were no longer in possession of their garments. This is most likely to happen if one shifts due to extreme stress.

Shifters are family oriented and even though some of their animal forms are loners, they do prefer to congregate in large family groups. It's not uncommon to find an entire apartment building taken up by one 'pack' of shifters, sometimes even whole neighborhoods or small towns will be made up of nothing but shifters.

In relation to the other species on the board, they are arguably the weakest and most human ( aside from the humans themselves ). They are stronger and faster, and based on their animal form have various other skills, but it's not much when put alongside a werewolf or a vampire. Shifters have one thing going against them and that's the fact that they're delicious. The mixing of animal/human in their blood makes it stronger than regular human blood, and far sweeter. Some vampires have quite the addiction.

How to kill a shifter

It's surprisingly easy to kill a shifter, providing you can get to them in that way. They're tougher than a human, and far more cunning, but shooting or cutting any vital organ will do the trick. As will removing the head and/or heart, or draining them of all their blood.

How to become a shifter

Well, you can't really. Another difference between them and the werewolves; a shifter's bite won't change you. Though there have been instances where being with a shifter/surrounding oneself with them will trigger the animal laying dormant inside of a human. This process takes time though, and it's very rare. Born shifters will not turn for the first time until puberty hits, and at first can be very erratic.

WEREWOLVES

There's some legends about how werewolves came to be. One legend says they were cursed by the moon. Shifters would have you believe that only the worst of the worst become werewolves, that something inherently evil within a person twists a perfectly good shifter into a monster. The truth of the matter is much simpler; werewolves are a genetic abnormality. Perhaps there was magic involved long ago, but nobody really remembers anymore. What they do remember is that nobody likes a werewolf.

Among the supernatural community werewolves are outcasts and loners. Though there are packs out there in the great wide somewhere, these gatherings are rare. Nobody wants a pack of werewolves living next door ( what would the neighbors think ) and so most werewolves are loners simply because it's easier, safer. Being a werewolf means having an animal inside of you. While shifters can understand this, they don't comprehend how someone could let that animal run so rampant and free. As far as vampires are concerned the difference between the two is in the blood; werewolves taste horrible, while shifters are like the gourmet version of regular old human.

Werewolves have two forms; their regular wolf form that they can shift into at will and control without issue, and then their full moon form. This monstrosity is why they've been kicked out of the shifter community. It's more humanoid then animal, and nearly uncontrollable. Only the oldest and most powerful werewolves ( after years of agonizing training ) can control their second forms and make it come at will. But don't worry, you can keep it from slaughtering helpless virgins by locking yourself in a strong room or the use of silver chains. Alternatively, find yourself a powerful witch ally to give you a helping hand.

How to kill a werewolf

The only way to kill a werewolf is through silver; silver bullets and silver nitrate are especially deadly. Wolf's bane can also cause some unwanted weaknesses and side effects. A werewolf can be extremely powerful but only really during the full moon, the rest of the time they have the same strengths as a regular shifter.

How to become a werewolf

Their bite is highly contagious but only during the full moon, so don't worry about getting frisky as long as it's not that time of the month. The only other way is to be born a werewolf, which can happen providing at least one parent is a werewolf themselves. The curse typically kicks in when puberty occurs, though in some rare instances a werewolf could be a late bloomer.

VAMPIRES

Alternatively known as the 'living' dead, vampires eke out an almost parasitical existence; feeding off the blood of mortal beings in order to retain their youth and their strength (though they are able to consume normal food and drink, it will not satisfy their hunger). Generally, a vampire enjoys superior strength and speed, but these abilities rely heavily on each individuals blood consumption. A vampire who feeds regularly and heavily will be far stronger than one who takes only the bare minimum to survive.

If a vampire goes without properly feeding for more than 48hrs they will begin to feel extreme, almost impossible to ignore cravings. If they persist, then they will become susceptible to an animalistic, blind blood-lust. They will be unable to control themselves, and there have been many reports of vampires attempting to abstain, only to wind up brutally murdering their loved ones. This, combined with the general death sentence by starvation after 1 week of abstinence- is why drinking a healthy amount of blood daily is heavily advised by London's Vampire Council.

While certainly sensitive to UV rays, a vampire may go out during the day for short periods, with appropriate levels of protection from the sun i.e. sunblock, hats, long sleeves. Providing they cover as much of their skin as they can, and don't dally too long in direct sunlight, they can survive it. Prolonged exposure will lead to a sensation not unlike vertigo, before the vampire loses consciousness. If a vampire were to be left in direct sunlight for over 6 hours, they would likely die of what would appear to be severe heatstroke. If a powerful witch can be persuaded, a vampire may be gifted with a ring, locket or amulet that will allow them to walk in the sun. This magic requires heavy sacrifice and a large toll on the witches power and strength, so isn't often done. (will require admin approval).

A vampires abilities greatly rely upon the amount of blood consumed. A healthy vampire, who drinks the appropriate amount of blood will find themselves endowed with great speed and superior strength to one who drinks only the minimum needed to survive. All vampires are also blessed with the ability to 'compel' weaker species to do their bidding: this works best on humans, though can also affect werewolves and shifters to a degree. It has no effect on witches or ghosts. Again, the more blood a vampire has consumed- the more effective this ability.

Contrary to popular belief, vampires can change their appearance. This is meant in the very general sense; a new haircut will not grow back to its original length immediately, but it will grow back. Nails still require trimming, facial hair will grow back. A vampire is not officially 'dead' after all, and the magic that keeps their hearts beating keeps their bodies alive to a degree. So no, they are not a frozen snapshot of how they looked before being turned, but they won't get any older.

How to kill a vampire

Aside from prolonged exposure to the sun, there are a few proven ways to weaken or kill a vampire. While undeniably immortal, a vampire may be weakened by pure silver. A wooden stake to the heart will paralyse a vampire, with the only true way to effectively kill one being to remove its head or its heart. A vampire who refuses to feed will also succumb to a true death after a week of abstinence.

How to become a vampire

To become a vampire, one must have their blood almost entirely drained, and then replaced in part with the blood of their would-be sire. This is a risky process, with only an 80% success rate. Sometimes, the human will simply pass away from blood-loss before the transformation can take place. Humans, shifters, witches and warlocks can all become vampires, but the latter three groups will lose all their previous abilities. All vampires feel a bond to their sire, though how strong depends on each individual case. Some vampires find themselves easily controlled by their sire's will, others are entirely independent. Nobody knows the defining factors behind this phenomenon, but it's generally believed to have something to do with the age of the sire.

GHOSTS

Pale shadows of their former selves. A ghost is the memory of a once living person (be they human, vampire, witch, shifter or werewolf) who is now cursed to wander the earth, unable to find peace. There have been accounts of a ghost managing to find rest and finally shuffling off this mortal plane, but this is a rare occurrence. Often, a soul becomes a ghost due to a crippling fear of death, or an adamant refusal to accept their life is over. Some relish the opportunity to become a ghost and haunt their enemies, while some more benevolent spirits simply wish to protect or watch over a loved one.

Usually ghosts are intangible, almost transparent beings: quite literally a washed out version of their living self. You can see and hear them, but cannot touch them. With great concentration, a ghost can manage to make themselves corporeal for up to an hour at a time, but it takes a great toll on their energy and they will fall back into their near transparent states for between 24-36 hours depending on how long they remained solid. With the help of a witch willing to cast a sacrificial spell, a ghost can achieve what is known as a 'second chance at life' with a fully corporeal form. These "new" bodies will not be the same however; they will be forever cold to the touch, like a corpse- and they will have no sensation of taste or feeling. They will simply be a solid version of their ghostly selves, able to communicate and feel emotion, but unable to feel any physical sensations or taste food.

How to kill a ghost

As ghosts are by definition dead already, this cannot be done. You can however help one to pass on by helping them complete their unfinished business and/or convincing them to let go of their grip on this plane of existence.

How to become a ghost

Quite simple really: you have to die, and refuse to pass on. Or die with unfinished business.
